That means that the player builds – or rather deconstructs – the game world and creates platforms that way. SteamWorld Dig has platform elements in that the player runs, jumps and encounters foes, but the main objective is mining. Besides health, the player also needs coal for light, and water for special abilities. The player can upgrade the tools used for digging as progression is made in the game. The player controls Rusty, a steam-powered robot who is equipped with a pickaxe, but can gain access to a variety of tools, such as a drill and dynamite. The objective of the game is to investigate the mines underneath the old Western town Tumbleton in order to unearth the secrets lurking below. SteamWorld Dig is a 2D platform game that revolves around mining for resources and ores. It was released on Google's cloud gaming service Stadia on 10 March 2020, and on Amazon's cloud gaming service Luna on 20 October 2020. A sequel, SteamWorld Dig 2, was released in September 2017. A successor, SteamWorld Heist, was released in December 2015. Later, SteamWorld Dig was released on 5 December 2013 for Microsoft Windows, Mac, and Linux on Steam, on 18 March 2014 in North America and on 19 March 2014 in Europe for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, on 28 August 2014 for Wii U, on 5 June 2015 for Xbox One, and on 1 February 2018 for Nintendo Switch. SteamWorld Dig was initially released on the Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo 3DS in Europe and Australia on 7 August 2013, North America on 8 August 2013, and Japan on 20 November 2013. The objective of the game is to dig through Tumbleton's mine, which also involves solving puzzles and platforming to avoid traps and enemies. The second installment in the SteamWorld series and the sequel to SteamWorld Tower Defense, SteamWorld Dig has the player control Rusty, a steam-powered robot who arrives at a small Western mining town called Tumbleton after having received a deed for a mine from his long-forgotten uncle, Joe. Once I started playing it, it was pretty hard for me to put my 3DS down, however, I had to do it, the review wasn’t going to write itself.įor a price tag of $8.99, SteamWorld Dig is a must-have for any Nintendo 3DS owner. Verdict: SteamWorld Dig, digging up some serious fun.įinally, even though SteamWorld Dig is a sweet and short game but the developers have worked hard to give you all the fun and entertainment in the few hours of gameplay. It doesn’t take away anything from the gameplay either. I like the dark theme of the music though but for an hour straight, it started getting on my nerves, not a downside at all though, it’s probably just me. The sound and background music is also pretty decent but once you’re into the game for an hour, the music might start getting a little bit annoying or maybe, that’s just me. It offers great graphics for a small budget game, everything from the world, towns, mines, enemies and all the robots look simply awesome. When it comes to visuals, SteamWorld Dig is one of the best game I’ve played so far on my 3DS (which isn’t a lot). SteamWorld Dig Gameplay on the Nintendo 3DS Graphics ![]() It doesn’t seem much in the beginning when you have small amount of money but it will definitely shock you when you’re much farther in the game with lot of money. This is where the worst part comes in, when you die you lose 50% of all the money you have to renew your broken body. The game is not all easy because there will be times when you get stuck, like permanently stuck and your only choice would be to use the Self Destruct option. You can buy other tools and also upgrade your robot, after all machines need an upgrade every now and then. ![]() You can then sell your findings in order to upgrade your character and its weapons. You will find a lot of treasures, minerals, and even strong enemies along your digging journey. All Rusty has in the beginning is a pickaxe which comes in handy while digging. You are a lonely robot miner named Rusty who’s come to a little town to claim his uncle’s mine. SteamWorld Dig is a mash-up of different games, it’s part platformer, part RPG and part puzzle but All fun-filled highly immersive game. However the Swedish developers, Image & Form have released a sequel to the original SteamWorld game which is not actually a direct sequel instead a whole new game with completely different gameplay called SteamWorld Dig. Why? because I’m not a big fan of Tower Defense games at all. Remember the SteamWorld: Tower Defense from Nintendo DSi? Well, I sure do and to be honest, I didn’t like it. ![]()
